Etsy search matches what buyers type against your titles, tags, attributes and categories. Good listings use the words a buyer would use, not the words a designer would use.
Think like the buyer
A buyer searching for a gift types who it is for, what it is and the style they want, for example “funny camping mug for dad”. Your clever design name means nothing to them.
Titles
- Put the most important phrase first, in plain words.
- Describe what the item is, then who it is for or the occasion.
- Keep it readable. Stuffing in repeated keywords hurts click through.
Tags
- Use all available tag slots.
- Use multi word phrases, not single words.
- Cover different angles: product type, style, recipient, occasion, theme.
- Don’t repeat the exact same phrase you already used in a category or attribute.
Attributes and categories
Fill in every relevant attribute (colour, occasion, holiday). They act like extra tags.
Where to find search phrases
- Type a word into Etsy search and note the autocomplete suggestions.
- Check your Shop Stats to see which searches already bring visitors.
TREVOR: add a before and after example of a real Odd Lantern listing title and the change in views, if you have it.
